Mercyhurst Women's Basketball's Jayde Boyd and Men's Ice Hockey's Noah Kane put together impressive performances to help their teams to big wins on the road this weekend, earning themselves PPG Paints Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
On Friday, Boyd tied her season high with 14 points in the Lakers' 82-77 overtime win against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in their opening game of the Rollins Classic in Winter Park, Florida. She also added 10 rebounds to post her second consecutive double-double.
The junior from Pittsburgh also had a career-high four steals in that game. She added nine more rebounds and five points in Saturday's loss to Rollins College.
The Lakers will begin PSAC play this weekend, as they head on the road to Shippensburg Friday before taking on Lock Haven Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Kane scored two of the Lakers' five goals in their upset win over No. 17 Ohio State Friday. He scored the first Mercyhurst goal after Jake Beaune's shot rebounded back in front of the crease. That goal tied the game at 1-1 in the second period.
He added another in the third period, the first of six goals scored in the period by both teams. The sophomore from Buffalo, New York, again got some help from Beaune, this time redirecting Beaune's shot past the goal tender to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead.
The Lakers will be back on the road this weekend, visiting Bentley for a pair of AHA matchups Friday and Saturday. Friday's puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while Saturday's game will get going at 5:05 p.m.
