Field Hockey Falls 6-1 to No. 2 West Chester

The Mercyhurst University Field Hockey team played host to the West Chester University Rams on Saturday evening. The Rams defeated the Lakers by a score of 6-1.

In the first quarter, Mercyhurst scored early into the game to take a 1-0 courtesy of Evelien Hulshof. The freshman Holfshof scored her second goal of the season. The Lakers held on to the lead for the duration of the quarter until the 14:33 mark when Claudia Jaszczak tied things up at 1-1.

In the second quarter, the teams continued to trade possession for the majority of the quarter.  West Chester was able to tack on two late goals to take a 3-1 lead into the halftime break. Kayla Desormeau started in cage for Mercyhurst. The Freshman made eight saves against the No. 2 team in the country during the first half.

During the second half of play, the Rams added three more goals to the scoreboard ultimately taking the contest 6-1. Valerie van Kuijck earned herself a hat trick as she put the last West Chester goal in net at the 11:00 mark in the third quarter. The two teams played a scoreless fourth quarter.

Desormeau ended the contest with 17 saves on 23 shots faced.

The Lakers will travel to Greensburg, PA next Tuesday to compete against PSAC opponent Seton Hill. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
