Men's Soccer Beats Slippery Rock In Overtime

Slippery Rock—The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team earned a vital three points against Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

The Rock took the early lead in just the sixth minute.

The Lakers outshot the Rock 6-3 in the first half but were down on the scoreboard 1-0.

In the 54th minute, Mercyhurst tied the game as Sidney Warden scored his team leading and PSAC leading 15th goal.

The Lakers and Rock finished 90 minutes tied at one and the two teams went into extra time. After 90 minutes, the Lakers outshot the 16-3 while the Rock didn't register a shot in the second half.

In the 100th minute the Lakers called game. Tom Barry scored his fifth goal of the year to give the Lakers all three points.

Playoff Picture

At time of publishing, the Lakers sit tied with Gannon for the top spot in the PSAC West standings. Mercyhurst is tied with 17 points while Seton Hill is in second with 15 points. The Griffins and Golden Knights square off Saturday night with the winner taking the lead in the PSAC West.

Coach's Corner

Head Coach Ryan Osborne is proud of his team after a tough start to the game. "We gave up a poor goal today and then we had to battle a tough, resolute Slippery Rock team." Osborne was also proud of the effort in the end. "Credit to the boys in the end, they never stopped and found a way to win this game even after SRU moved into a deep defensive block. We showed great character today and for that I am happy." Osborne knows each game is important going forward "we know that we will have to be cleaner and better ahead of Gannon on Wednesday but that is a challenge that we will meet head on."

The Lakers close out the regular season this week as they face Gannon on Wednesday, in their final regular season the Lakers host Cal at Saxon Stadium on Saturday.
