Women's Soccer Completes Season Sweep Of Slippery Rock

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team completed their first sweep of Slippery Rock since 2009 with a 1-0 win over The Rock.

How it Happened

The Lakers and Rock played a back and forth first half. In the 33rd minute Emily Mijares scored her fifth goal of the season as she took the long pass from Bethan O'Donnell. Mijares went into on goal and made no mistake beating the keeper on the right side of the cage.

 

After the first half the Lakers were up 1-0 despite being outshot 7-4 overall, shots on goal were 3-1 in favor of the Lakers.

The second half the Lakers turned up the defense and limited the chances for The Rock. Slippery Rock had their best chance to tie the game in the 54th minute as they had three shots in the box. Maddie Elbro made the first save, the rebound was blocked by the Laker defense core while the third and final shot banged off the crossbar.

Slippery Rock had just one more shot on goal the rest of the game as the Lakers kept The Rock to the outside and out of scoring areas. At the end of the game the Lakers had six shots on goal compared to just three for Slippery Rock.

Number Five

Mijares scored her fifth goal of the season while the Lakers and Elbro earned their fifth clean sheet of the season. Elbro needed just three saves to earn the clean sheet, this season she has 53 total saves and a goals against average of .81.

Playoffs are Coming….

The top four teams in the west division make the postseason. The Lakers sit in third with 22 points, Gannon is in first with 26 points, Slippery Rock second with 25 points. Edinboro is at the heels of the Lakers with 21 points. IUP is on the outside looking in with 19 points. Clarion has 13 points, UPJ 10 points, Cal nine points and Seton Hill rounds out the table with seven points. The Lakers currently have the tie-breaker with Slippery Rock due to head-to-head records.
