Spano and Gorring Named to Erie Metro Chapter of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame

ERIE, Pa. -- Head baseball coach Joe Spano and Mercyhurst alunus Scott Gorring were among twelve honorees elected to the Erie Metro Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame announced Tueday night.

Spano is already the winningest coach in Mercyhurst history with a record of 654-383 despite a shortened 2020 season. Spano has lead the Lakers to four 40-win seasons and has the 10 winningest seasons in Mercyhurst history. Under his direction, Mercyhurst has made three DII World Series appearances in the five seasons including being one of the final four teams standing a year ago. Spano was also named the Atlantic Region Coach of the Year twice. In his tenure, tweleve Lakers have been drafted including a pair of pitchers from the 2019 squad.

Gorring played football under Head Coach Tony DeMeo from 1984 through 1987. During those years, the Lakers went a combined 28-11. Gorring saw action primarily as a split end but also returned kickoffs and punts. He finished his career with 94 receptions for 1780 yards and 12 touchdowns. Many of his receiving records stood until Head Coach Joe Kimball and the Lakers unveiled their run-and-shoot attack in the late 90s. Gorring led the Lakers in receiving in both 1986 and 1987. In 1985, Gorring was part of two history-making occasions. He scored 94 points in a Laker uniform and amassed 3,258 all-purpose yards. During his years, Gorring was a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Second Team Small College All-Star in 1986, a Football News Pre-Season All America choice in 1987, and a Pittsburgh Press All-District First Team selection in 1987. He also played baseball for four years, compiling a career .294 average for coaches Fred Conger, Bob Shreve, and Joe Jordano. In his final career at bat in 1988, Gorring hit a grand slam homer at the old Kanty Prep Field as the Lakers defeated visiting Westminster.

The 2020 induction ceremony scheduled for this June has been cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. The inductees will be honored in June of 2021.
