LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. - Junior attackman
Caleb Kueber matched his career-high with eight goals as the fourth-ranked Lakers powered past the host Chestnut Hill College Griffins by a score of 17-10 on Saturday afternoon at Victory Field in non-conference action. He previously had eight last season in the game against Roberts Wesleyan.
Mercyhurst got off to a quick start as
Devin Pipher set up Kueber for his first and then it would be Pipher on the scoresheet when he beat Jake Miller with an unassisted talley off a restart. With 7:30 to go in the first
Timothy McMullen went in search of his first of the season, but his offering sailed wide. However, just 10-seconds later off the ensuing restart he muscled his way to the front of the cage and slipped one past Miller to stretch the advantage to 3-0. Chestnut Hill cracked the scoreboard after Carson Rees and Ben Revak fired wide Ress beat
Hunter Emerson to make it 3-1. Then, over a minute later they closed to within 3-2 when Scott Wilden cashed in. The visitors scored two more times in a 15-second span as
Dan Kritkausky buried an unassisted tally, before
Benjamin Smith-Wilcox found Kueber for the final goal of the frame making it 5-2.
Both sides found the back of the net in the opening minute of the second when
Tommy Angelicola and Maurice Kelly each scored to leave the score at 6-3. Wilden and Kelly sandwhiched a marker by Kueber leaving the Lakers ahead 7-5 still with eight minutes remaining in the half. McMullen along with Kueber had shots knocked away by Miller, before the Smith-Wilcox to Kueber connection struck again to regain a three-goal cushion. After Revak, put one behind Emerson to trim it to 8-6, Pipher capped the scoring for the half as he fired one into the goal for the 9-6 lead at the break.
To begin the third quarter it was all Mercyhurst with
Nathan Grenon and Kueber putting home even strength markers, coupled by man-up goals by Smith-Wilcox along with Kueber to extend the advantage to 13-6, just 4:12 into the period. The Griffins stayed within striking distance netting the final three markers of the quarter as Rees scored twice and Wilden cashed in man-up to have it 13-9 through 45-minutes.
The Lakers left no chance for the hosts to get back into the game scoring the first four goals of the final frame. First, Kueber buried the rock on a feed from
Nicholas Bartone at the 2:31 mark. Then,
Peyton Manko netted one unassisted, followed by Kueber and Smith-Wilcox to open the margin up to 17-9. However, Kelly put away the final goal of the contest with 28-ticks remaining off a feed from J.R. Howell.
