CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mercyhurst field hockey dropped the second game of their two-game North Carolina trip falling to Queens University of Charlotte by a score of 5-0 on Saturday morning at Bessant Field.
The host Royals were afforded the best offensive opportunities in the first quarter as they earned two penalty corners and recorded one shot from Mazvita Mtisi that was turned aside by the Lakers goalie
Libby Jones.
In the first two minutes of the second frame Queens posted three shots off of a pair of penalty corners, but still were not able to beat Jones. Then, with 6:58 gone the home team got on the board as Hanna Nechay jammed home a loose ball after a pass from Victoria Tredinnick for the 1-0 lead. With less than ten second left in the half the Royals made it 2-0.
Mercyhurst got their first shot of the contest with 7:57 elapsed in the third when
Katie Goodenow ripped one wide. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Queens found the net three times on goals from Millie Eaton-Jones, Molly Walter, and Tredinnick to grab a 5-0 edge through three.
After a green card was given to the Royals Leighton Eber,
Alexis Lovewell forced the first save of the day out of Avian Thompson. The Lakers picked up their first two penalty corners of the game a little over midway into the fourth, but the only shot they mustered was blocked by the defense off the stick of
Katie Ballew.
Hayley Skidmore would get the last shot of the contest with 27-seconds remaining however it to was blocked.
Jones recorded two saves in cage for Mercyhurst, while Thompson for the Royals made a pair of stops.
The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to Greensburg, Pennsylvania for a matchup with the Seton Hill University Griffins at 4pm.
