No. 1 Millersville Too Much For Lakers

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst field hockey team hung tough through the opening 30-minutes, but then top-ranked Millersville University scored four times between the third and fourth quarters to down the Lakers 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Bimesderfer Stadium.

The Marauders recorded the first shot of the game 1:28 into the opening frame when Annabelle Teierney was shutdown by keeper Libby Jones.  However, the second attempt of the quarter by Erica Tarsi found the net for the 1-0 lead with 3:24 gone.  Mercyhurst recorded their opening chance at the 8:11 mark as a penalty corner inserted by Mia D'Amato eventually got to the stick of Hayley Skidmore who blasted one wide of goal.  With 38-seconds remaining Kate Strickland found herself inside the circle and shot wide of Jones to end the first.

7:06 into the second Clare Ahern had a great opportunity to even the score, unfortunately, for the Lakers her shot beat goalie Autumn Peters but struck the crossbar.  Millersville posted the final three shots of the half however none tested Jones and the teams went to the break at 1-0.

The Marauders put the visitors on thier heels early in the third as in the opening five minutes they recorded six shots and four penalty corners forcing four saves out of Jones.  Millersville got goals from Annabelle Tierney, Asia Weaver, and Tarsi for a 4-0 edge through three.  Mercyhurst would be held shot less in the period.

Pili Zaballa posted the first shot of the fourth with 6:41 to play, before the hosts tacked on one more with under two minutes remaining for the 5-0 final.

Mercyhurst totaled two shots on the day with one each coming from Skidmore and Ahern.  Jones was busy between the pipes making 10 saves.

Millersville got a game-high eight shots (six on goal) and a pair of goals for Tarsi.  Peters in net was not forced to make a stop.

The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, September 25 when they welcome the Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania to Saxon Stadium at 4pm.
