ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst softball team fell 7-2 and 8-0 to California, Pa during Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
 
The Lakers are back in action on April 7, when they host PSAC opponent Seton Hill for a double header starting at 11:30 a.m.
 
California 7, Mercyhurst 2 (7 inn)
The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before adding three more in the second. They then added two in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to make it 7-0. The Lakers rallied for two runs in the sixth but it wasn't enough.
 
Ellie Dougher and Taylor Fry scored runs for the Lakers. Dougher, Jamie Ward, Alyssa Coons, Chloe McQuestion and Paige Crittela had one hit each.
 
Ward and Coons tallied the team's RBI. Ward also had the lone double for the Lakers.
 
Tori Pierucci pitched four innings for the Lakers while striking out five batters and allowing five earned runs. Laura Gregory pitched three innings, striking out two batters and allowing only one earned run.
 
For California, Brooke Wilson scored three runs while Taylor Robblee, Emilee Downing, Kaitlyn Corle and Alexa Pastor had one run each. Wilson has two hits and single hits were recorded by Sierra Besser-Paul, Janelle Allison, Abby Sachse, Robblee, Downing, Corle and Pastor.
 
Downing had three RBI as she recorded homered. Wilson and Besser-Paul had one RBI each.
 
Downing was the winning pitcher going the distance for California. She walked two batters and allowing two earned runs. She had five strikeouts.
 
California 8, Mercyhurst 0 (5 inn.)
California scored one run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. They then scored four runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to take the game 8-0.
 
Jenna Balducci went 2-for-2 while Taylor Fry recorded the other Mercyhurst (6-21, 2-4).
 
Gregory pitched four innings for Mercyhurst while recording one strike out. Pierucci pitched for one inning while tallying two strike outs and not allowing any earned runs.
 
Carly Konopka, Wilson, Robblee, Downing, Besser-Paul, Sachse, Pastor and Corle recorded runs for California Pa. (7-15, 3-3).
 
Konopka hit a grand slam while Robblee had the only double play for the Vulcans.
 
Robblee was the winning pitcher for the Vulcans doing the distance on the mound. She walked three batters and recorded four strike outs.
