Mercyhurst Baseball Splits the Weekend with Saginaw Valley State

ERIE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst baseball team split the two game series against Saginaw Valley State this weekend.
 
Game one: (W, 7-0)

Due to weather, the game on Friday would be cut to a five inning game instead of nine.  In the top half of the first, Matthew Minninck would strikeout the side. In the bottom half, Mercyhurst would score of a Jack Elliott solo homerun.  In the top half of the second, Minnick would again strikeout the side giving him six strikeouts in just two innings. 

Matthew Schneider led the team with three RBI off his homerun in the fourth inning. 

In the bottom half, Saginaw Valley State (4-8) would load the bases on walks before walking Domenic DeRenzo allowing Matthew Surowiec to touch home. This would make the score 2-0 Mercyhurst (8-1).

In the bottom half of the third, a Surowiec single would score Gibson making the score 3-0. Minnick would keep the Cardinals scoreless through four before MU would tack on four runs with three of them coming off a Matthew Schneider homer. 

Minnick would get the win pitching all five innings, with nine strikeouts while throwing a no-hitter.

For SVSU, Godfrey was the losing pitcher, going 3.1 innings allowing seven runs with four strikeouts.

SVSU would not have an answer for Minnick and would end the game without a hit nor a run.  Lakers would go onto win 7-0.

Game Two: (L, 8-1)
Sunday's game would be the second and final game of the series with Saturday's game being cancelled due to weather.

Dom Cecere and Josh Surewiec both led the Lakers with one hit each.

In the first, O'Donnell would get the Lakers on the board in the first inning scoring DeRenzo off a groundout.  MU would hold the lead until the fifth inning before an error would spark the Saginaw Valley State Falcons (5-8) scoring two runs to take the lead. 

SVSU would tack on five late inning runs. Mercyhurst (8-2) would not have an answer for the Falcons losing the second game 8-1.

Brandon Wise would earn the victory for the Falcons going seven innings, allowing just two hits and recording 11 strikeouts.

Tyler Garbee would get the loss for MU, going  five innings,  with two unearned runs and six strikeouts.
 
Next Up: The Lakers will begin conference play this upcoming weekend as they will travel to Pitt-Johnstown.
