ERIE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst men's basketball team wins on the road at Gannon 63-58 to take both of the Porreco Pride of Erie Games this season. The win tonight also gave Coach Manchel his 400th career win.
Jason Massey led the Lakers with 20 points while
Nelson Maxwell was the other Laker who scored in double digits with 13.
Patrick Smith led the game in rebounds with seven, respectively.
For Gannon (9-17, 7-12), Daryl Porter lead with 16 points. Matt Johnson tallied 11 while DeAnte Cisero led with five boards.
In the first, GU was able to jump out to an early 8-2 lead before the Lakers came storming back on a 5-0 run by Massey who had the Lakers first nine points of the game. At the 11:47 mark of the first half,
Nelson Maxwell would give Mercyhurst its first lead of the game 12-10 off a three pointer. This would start a 12-0 run for MU going up 21-10 with under nine to go in the first half. All 12 points came off of three pointers for the Lakers with two coming from
Trystan Pratapas. With under four to go in the half, Maxwell would burry another three to give the Lakers its largest lead of the half 32-19. Gannon would not go away and would go on a 10-2 run of its own cutting the deficit to five going into the half down 34-29.
Right out of the gate, Mercyhurst would go on a little 8-0 run to put them back up 13. MU would maintain this lead until just over the 13 minute mark of the second when the Golden Knights would come charging back. GU would go on a 9-2 run making the score 46-43 Mercyhurst with just over 10 to go in the game. A made jumper by Massey would extend the Laker lead back up to seven before another 9-2 run would allow Gannon to tie the game at 54 with 3:54 to go in the game. Down the stretch Maxwell would play a huge part in the Lakers never letting the lead slip to Gannon scoring the last seven of nine points to ice the game giving Mercyhurst the victory 63-58
MU led the game in field goal percentage with 53.1 percent compared to the Knights' 45.2. Gannon was able to out-rebound the Lakers 27-23 and outscore them on bench points 20-19.
