Women's Basketball Loses Close Game on Road at Gannon 62-60

ERIE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst women's basketball team came up short in a well fought game against rival Gannon in the Porreco Pride of Erie Game 62-60.

Game Recap
Three different Lakers were in double digits including team leader Nicolete Newman with 16 followed by Eliza Oswalt and Amber Renz's 11 points. Oswalt led the Lakers five rebounds while Emily Shopene and Rachel Chessar each had team high, three assists, respectively.
For the Golden Knights, Chelsea Rourke led the game with 23 points.

Game Summary
In the first, both teams remained tight before Gannon was able to pull ahead and go into the second quarter up 20-13. In the second, Mercyhurst (9-17, 6-13) was able to take the lead with just under the five minute mark in before half off of a jumper by Shopene giving the Lakers the lead 25-24. There wouldn't be another basket scored in the half until just under a minute to go with a made free throw by Gannon's Sydney Mitchell. Neither team would then score another point going into the half with the score all knotted up at 25.
To open the third, Gannon (12-15, 8-11) went on an 8-0 run before Lauren Lapertosa put the Lakers first second half points on the board off of a layup. With 2:29 left in the quarter Newman would cut the deficit down to two off of her three pointer making the score 39-37. The Golden Knights reacted to Newman's three and would extend its lead back up to seven by the end of the third (46-39). In the fourth with 8:29 to go in the game, Oswalt would yet again cut the GU lead to three 47-44 before hitting a three pointer of her own to then tie the game. Gannon would go ahead again by two with 4:43 left in the game before Oswalt again answered with a three pointer giving the Lakers the lead 50-49.
Both teams would exchange the lead four different times before with just 21 seconds left in the game that Oswalt would give the Lakers the lead off a made layup 60-59. Mitchell would answer Oswalts layup of her own giving GU the lead with six seconds left.  The Lakes would call a timeout and go to inbound the ball at half court but would turn the ball over and commit a foul.  Rourke would make both free throws for the Golden Knights putting them up 62-60 to close the game out and splitting the Porreco Pride of Erie Games with the Lakers.

Gannon slightly outshot Mercyhurst from the field shooting 44.7 percent compared to the Lakers 44.6. GU also out-rebounded MU 35-23 but Mercyhurst tallied 28 bench points compared to the Knights eight.

Next Up: The Lakers will travel to Pitt-Johnstown on Feb. 27 for its final road game of the season.
