Women's Basketball Falls on the Road to Slippery Rock on Wednesday Night

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.—The Mercyhurst women's basketball team fell on the road 90-63 on Wednesday night. Lauren Lapertosa led the Lakers with 11 points. Nicolete Newman, Jenna Kunst, Rachel Chessar and Eliza Oswalt all had nine points for Mercyhurst.Oswalt led the team with seven rebounds.
 
For Slippery Rock (10-13, 8-9), Daeja Quick and Brooke Hinderliter led SRU with 23 points each.
 
In the first half, SRU would open the game going on a 7-0 run until Newman would hit a three to put the Lakers on the board. Right after Newman's three, The Rock would go on another run (10-0) to put SRU up 17-3 before Amber Renz would end the run with another three. Renz's basket would start a 12-4 run from Mercyhurst (8-15, 5-11) and would go into the second down six, 21-15.
 
In the second quarter, it wouldn't be until the 6:22 mark where Hinderliter would score the first points of the quarter hitting a three putting SRU up 24-15. After an Oswalt bucket and one, SRU would strike with another 10-0 run going up 34-18. Slippery Rock would carry the lead into the half 42-24. Slippery Rock's First half field goal percentage was 53.13 (17-32) while MU shot 25.93 percent from the floor (7-27).
 
In the third, Mercyhurst wouldn't have an answer to Slippery Rock's mini runs as they would extend its lead to as many as 28 points. MU would cut the deficit to 22 before Ciara Patterson would hit a three pointer with five seconds left in the quarter to put SRU up 64-39. In the fourth SRU would go on a long 8-2 run to put them up 84-56 with 3:19 to go in the game. The Rock would again push the lead to its largest lead of the game (29) before closing out the game 90-63.
 
SRU from the field for the game shot 52.5 percent with MU shooting 32.2. Slippery Rock outrebounded Mercyhurst 42-32. The Lakers outscored the Rock in bench points 36-26.
