ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's basketball team put six players in double-figures led by 21 each from Danny Ogele and
Cameron Gross en route to a comfortable 115-60 victory of Division III D'Youville College at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Friday night in the season opener.
The Lakers (1-0) gave the crowd something to cheer about early with
Zach McIntire and
Joel Ufele providing a couple of dunks sandwiched between a pair of Ogele jumpers for the 8-3 lead. Brian Sharp nailed a triple to trim the margin to 8-6, before the Spartans actually took the lead 10-8 four minutes in on a layup from Grant Beyer.Â
Andrew Seager,
Steve Cannady, and Gross helped the hosts to re-establish control with a 9-0 run 1:59 span to go ahead 17-10. With Mercyhurst holding eight at 21-13, the visitors battled back as three-pointers by Darrius Hartzog and Beyer brought it down to 21-19.Â
Trystan Pratapas made sure the Spartans would not keep the momentum as he stuck a triple to make it 24-19 which sparked a 12-2 run finished off by a driving layup by Gross stretching the advantage to 33-21 at the 6:57 mark. Another three from Hartzog brought D'Youville to within eight 35-27, but once again the Lakers did not allow the Spartans to put on pressure as
Nicholas Lang and
MiyKah McIntosh both buried three-pointers during a 12-1 charge to make it 47-28 with two minutes left. The Lakers closed on a 9-0 sprint capped off by a
Michael Bradley fastbreak to end the half 56-30. Â
Mercyhurst took their largest lead to that point out to 28 at 61-33 on a triple from McIntire 1:20 into the second half. At the 15:52 mark Ogele extended the advantage to 68-37 and the Lakers would maintain a sizeable lead out to 74-34, before jumpers from Hartzog and Miguel Juan Rosaales along with a three from Simeon Heard made it 74-51 still with 12:45 to go. A pair of free throws from Gross and Ufele, coupled with Lang and Bradley threes extended the advantage 86-53 with still ten minutes remaining. Mercyhurst would go over the century mark with four minutes left when Ogele hit a cutting Gross for the 101-57 advantage. Bradley scored the final basket of the contest with just 58-seconds for the 115-60 final. Over the final 10:04 of the game the Lakers outscored the Spartans 29-5.Â
The Lakers shot over 50% from the floor at 52.5%, while D'Youville was at 38.9%. Mercyhurst dominated the paint outscoring the Spartans 60-18 and 58-23 off the bench. They also out-rebounded the visitors 57-22, including 26-5 on the offensive end.Â
Joining Ogele and Gross in double-figures was Lang (15), Ufele (13), McIntire (10), and Seager (10). Gross was the only Laker in double-digit rebounds with 10, while Ogele and Lang each added eight.Â
Hartzog (15), Sharp (14), Beyer (12), and Rosales (10) were the Spartans in double-digits. Â
Mercyhurst returns to action on Thursday when they visit 18th-ranked Daemen College in Amherst, New York.
