Overtime Penalty Stroke Sinks Lakers in Season Finale

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Mercyhurst field hockey team played a scoreless contest against the host Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon for 78-minutes before a penalty stroke awarded to Alyssa Broadt in the second overtime was slotted home for the only goal of the game in 1-0 final at Steph Pettit Stadium.

The Lakers had the opening three chances of the match as Alexis Skibitsky was shutdown on all three shots by Huskies keeper Hannah Barnard.  At the 12:36 mark the home side got their only opportunity of the quarter when Willow Perkins had her attempt knocked away by Gabriella Amico allowing the game to stay 0-0 through one.

It took just 1:43 into the second for the Huskies to muster a shot as Tesa Hoffman earned a chance off a penalty corner, but once again Amico was there to say no.  Skibitsky recorded her fourth shot of game a little under two minutes later when she sent one wide.  Callie Edwards and Perkins had the only other attempts of the half, but both were denied by Amico.

After a green card was issued to Abby D'Amato the Huskies looked to take advantage when Foto Tsioles got loose inside the circle, but her attempt was snuffed out by Amico.  The Lakers were awarded a penalty corner with 6:12 gone in the third, but the resulting shot from Leah Rogers could not get by new Huskies netminder Abby Shaffer.  Mercyhurst would get two more corners in a ten-second span, however neither one would net a shot.  In the middle part of the frame the hosts put the pressure on, but attempts off the sticks of Perkins, Tsioles, and Edwards were turned aside by Amico.  At the 10:54 mark the Lakers had an opportunity at the lead as D'Amato fed in a corner that found Clare Ahern, unfortunately he offering sailed wide of cage.  Amico was called on once more before the end of the period and she was up to the task stopping Hoffman.

A very defensive fourth quarter saw only two shots recorded both by the Huskies, but Cheyenne Ott and Perkins both missed wide leading to overtime tied 0-0.

The Lakers did not post a chance in the first overtime as Bloomsburg fired four times at Amico and she steered away two of them both by Ott forcing a second extra session.  Mercyhurst had an opportunity at the winner in third minute of the second period of extra time when Mia D'Amato got in the attack area and was shutdown by Shaffer.  Amico stopped Perkins and Tsioles off of penalty corners holding the game 0-0.  Just when it seemed the game was destined for a shootout a Mercyhurst defender was called for hooking inside the circle which resulted in a penalty stroke for Broadt who slotted it home for the 1-0 win.

Bloomsburg outshot Mercyhurst 21-7 (15-5 on goal) and held a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Skibitsky led the Lakers with four shots, while in cage Amico made 14 saves.

The 2019 season comes to an end for Mercyhurst and the team will look ahead to the 2020 campaign.
