TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Mercyhurst men's hockey team scored twice in the third, but their comeback bid fell just short as the Lakers dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 20 Arizona State on Sunday.
The Sun Devils carried a 4-2 advantage into the final period and extended the lead with a goal from Brinson Pasichnuk 3:44 final frame.
James Anderson pulled the Lakers back within two, 5-3, with a power play tally less than two minutes later.
With 10:35 left in the third,
Owen Norton netted a power play goal to trim the advantage to 5-4. Arizona State netted an empty net goal with 12 seconds left to set the final.
Arizona State struck first with a power play goal 3:26 into the opening period.
Gueorgui Feduolov provided the answer for Mercyhurst with his first collegiate goal with 9:57 to play in the first.
In the second, the Sun Devils scored three straight to take a 4-1 lead.
Josh McDougall brought the Lakers to within 4-2 with a tally with 2:40 remaining in the period.
McDougall tallied a pair of points on a goal and an assist.
Ethan Johnson and
Ashton Stockie also notched two points on a pair of helpers.
The Lakers earned a series split with the Sun Devils and return home for to the Mercyhurst Ice Center Friday when they host Saint Lawrence at 7:05 p.m.
