ERIE, Pa. - Sophomore goalie
Libby Jones recorded eight saves on the day, but did not get the support at the other end of the field as the Mercyhurst field hockey suffered a 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference loss to Mansfield University on damp and windy Wednesday afternoon at Saxon Stadium.
The game started quietly as neither side recorded a shot in the opening nine minutes of action. Then, in the tenth minute the Mountaineers started to apply some pressure as Meghan Griffin and Saramae Radel earned the first attempts of the game, before Kalin Duke put the visitors on the board as she batted home the rebound off the Griffin offering for the 1-0 edge. Mercyhurst had a chance to level the game before the end of the frame, however,
Katie Ballew and
Alexandria Shumsky were denied by Brittany Ryan in the cage.
Despite beginning the second quarter down a player after being give a green card for delay of game it was the Lakers that went to work looking for the equalizer. In the 16th-minute
Hayley Skidmore and
Clare Ahern forced stops by Ryan in a five-second span keeping the game 1-0. Mansfield got shots from Dana Evans, Olivia Wagner, Radel, and Griffin, before Christie Buyer netted the second of the game at the 26:09-mark. Ahern tried to trim the margin at prior to half but her offering sailed wide of the net.
The Mountaineers made it 3-0 just under two minutes into the third when Buyer found Evans inside the circle for a one-timer. Ballew recorded the only chance of the period for Mercyhurst, unfortunately, Ryan was up to the task again.
Manfield had the only opportunity of the fourth when Radel got into the circle and was shutdown by Jones preserving the 3-0 final.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, October 5th when they visit the third-ranked Warriors of East Stroudsburg University for a 3:30pm start.
