Men's Basketball Suffers Tough Double-OT Loss to Slippery Rock

ERIE, Pa. -- Jason Massey had a double-double, totaling 32 points and 11 rebounds, as the Mercyhurst men's basketball team dropped a 92-91 double-overtime contest to PSAC opponent Slippery Rock on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

MiyKah McIntosh added 22 points and Nelson Maxwell chipped in with 10 for the Lakers (8-3, 3-3). Edvaldo Ferreira had eight rebounds and Derrick Ellis Jr. made five assists.

The Rock (8-5, 5-1) was led by a double-double effort of its own as Micah Till finished with 35 points and 11 rebounds. Jared Armstrong (16), Vinny Lasley (13), Nolen Gerald (12) and John Warren II (11) also reached double-digits in scoring for SRU.

Mercyhurst had trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before going on an 8-0 run across both halves to take its first lead early in the second period. Maxwell buried a 3-pointer to put the Lakers up, 39-38, at the time.

MU's largest lead was nine points at 64-55 before a 9-1 Slippery Rock run tied the contest at 65-65. The Lakers led three more times after that before the contest tied at 73-73 at the end of regulation.

Maxwell had six points during an 11-4 Mercyhurst stretch to begin overtime, but Slippery Rock responded with a 9-2 run to forge an 86-86 knot and send the contest into a second extra period.

The Lakers led only once in double-overtime -- after a trey by Massey to take an 89-87 lead -- before they were outscored, 5-2, the rest of the way. MU held Slippery Rock scoreless on the visitors' final two possessions, but failed to capitalize.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. PSAC home contest against Indiana (Pa.). Click HERE to purchase tickets.
