ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's basketball team dropped a 67-57 contest to PSAC opponent Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Monday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Jenna Kunst led the Lakers (7-10, 4-6) in scoring with 17 points while
Amber Renz and
Emily Shopene chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Eliza Oswalt made five assists and
Meghan Komendarek swatted four blocks.
For UPJ (9-8, 5-5), Gabrielle Smith was the high scorer with 21 points and eight rebounds. Tori Moreland added 15 points and Alli McGrath put in 14.
Mercyhurst began the game 8 of 9 from the field. Renz capped that stretch with a layup early in the second quarter, closing the Lakers' deficit to 23-22 before the visiting Mountain Cats pulled away with a 9-0 run.
UPJ led 37-31 at halftime, but four points from Kunst closed the gap to 37-35 in the third. Johnstown then went on another 9-0 run.
Mercyhurst trailed 46-40 after three quarters, but eventually closed its deficit to 51-47 before the Cats pushed their lead back to nine and held on the rest of the way.
The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday when cross-town rival Gannon visits for a PSAC contest at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased
