Lightning Delays Don't Stop #12 Baseball From Storming To Two Wins In Home Finale

ERIE, Pa – The 12th-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team had a bizarre afternoon conclude with two wins in its final two home games of the season Friday, May 4, at Mercyhurst Baseball Field.
 
The Lakers (30-10, 19-7 PSAC) took down Pitt Johnstown (11-29, 8-18 PSAC) 10-0 in a lightning-delayed game one before winning a shortened game two 10-3.

Mercyhurst 10, Pitt Johnstown 0
The Lakers gave themselves a healthy cushion in the early innings before a storm came through and delayed the game two different times due to lightning in the area.
 
Mercyhurst scored five runs in the first inning with RBI hits coming from Drew Delsignore, Matthew Schneider and Collin Fantaskey.
 
Alex O'Donnell tripled to right field in the bottom of the fourth to score Jimmy Standohar and extend the lead to 6-0.
 
The first lightning delay occured just before the start of the fifth inning and lasted a little over 30 minutes. Starting pitcher Chris Vallimont came back out for Mercyhurst after the delay to finish the top of the fifth inning.
 
Vallimont was dominant in his eighth win of the year (8-2) with ten strikeouts, no walks, and just one hit allowed.
 
Weather would cut his outing short with another longer delay just after he closed out the top of the fifth.
 
The Lakers bounced backe with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to close out the 4-hour, 20-minute game.
 
Ryan Smerkar and Tyler Passmore each notched a scoreless inning each in relief.

The Lakers were able to score ten runs again despite having the second game called after five innings due to darkness.
 
The Lakers jumped out early once again with a two-run home run by Delsignore in the first inning. The home run was his third of the season.
 
UPJ rallied in the top of the second to tie the score at two. In the top of the third with two outs, Mercyhurst starting pitcher Russell Lamovec exited the game with an injury, but Adam Jeannette was solid in relief once against with 2.1 innings pitched with one hit and only one run allowed. He also struck out two in his third win (3-0_.
Lamovec had five strikeouts before exiting.
 
Designore ended up game two just a triple short of the cycle with three hits in four plate appearances including a walk.
 
Kenny Robinson brought his own thunder to game two with a towering three-run homer to right field in the bottom of the third. He finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
 
Jack Elliott and Matthew Gibson also had a pair of hits each. O'Donnell had his second RBI-triple of the day in the fifth inning.
 
Mercyhurst wraps up the regular season with two more games at Pitt Johnstown tomorrow, May 5, starting at 1 p.m at Point Stadium. The Lakers have a chance to clinch the number one seed out of the West Division for the PSAC Tournament.
