CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to West Virginia State on Sunday in NCAA Tournament Atlantic Regional action.
The Lakers held a 2-1 advantage through doubles play before WVSU ralled for 4 of 6 points in singles action.
Mercyhurst earned 8-4 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 pairs.
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost defeated Laura Isbey and Kayla McKnight in the second match while
Ivona Plecevic and
Athina Tsagkaraki teamed for a victory at No. 3 over Hanna Kontsavaya and Sydney Miller.
WVSU's only doubles win came in the No. 1 match as Kierstin Hensley and Nina Dillwald earned an 8-3 decision against
Saioa Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic.
Gomez de Segura rebounded for a win in the top-tier singles match while
Ivona Plecevic claimed the other singles point for the Lakers (23-3) at No. 6.
Gomez de Segura bested Isbey, 6-3, 6-3, while Plecevic won opposite Kontsavaya, 6-0, 7-5.
West Virginia State claimed three straight-set wins, itself, at Nos. 2, 5 and 6: in order, Hensley defeated Frost, 6-2, 6-0; McKnight won against Spahalic, 6-1, 6-2; and Nina Tadic got past Tsagkaraki, 6-3, 7-6.
One singles match went into a third set -- between MU's Jeffress and WVSU's Dillwald at No. 3. Dillwald won the critical point, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
