ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst softball team secured a spilt in their doubleheader, against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Edinboro on Thursday afternoon, at the Mercyhurst Softball Field. The Lakers fell 4-1 to the Fighting Scots in the doubleheader's opening game, before storming to a 6-2 victory in the second half. Individual game recaps below.
Game One- Mercyhurst (1) vs Edinboro (4):
Cassandra Egelston held the highest batting average in the first contest for Merchurst (7-29, 4-14 PSAC), as she went 1-for-3.
Ellie Dougher went 1-for-4, while
Sarah Koscho held the team's sole RBI.
The Fighting Scots pushed out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Earning a run in the first when Danna Heh stole home, and one in the third when Heather Barrett hit a single homerun.
The Lakers cut into the Edinboro (6-21, 2-12 PSAC) lead shrinking it to 2-1 when Koscho was walked driving in the sole Mercyhurst run of the contest.
Edinboro posted two runs on Victoria Allocco's two RBI single during the top of the sixth inning.
Tori Pierucci was the losing pitcher for the Lakers, she threw for seven innings recording seven strikeouts, scattering four hits, and allowing one walk. Pierucci was charged with four earned runs, her record advances to 4-13.
Carley Nasca was the winning pitcher she threw for seven innings and scattered four hits against 30 batters faced, her record moves to 3-7.
Game Two- Mercyhurst (6) vs Edinboro (2):
Ellie Dougher led the Lakers' bats by going 2-for-3 and recorded two RBIs.
Sarah Koscho went 2-for-2 earning a RBI she also led steals with three.
Heather Nye went 1-for-3 and recorded a homerun.
Nye opened scoring by smacking a homerun for the contest driving the Lakers to a 1-0. Nye recorded her homerun during her first at bat in the bottom of the second inning.
Teller stretched the Mercyhurst lead to 2-0 when she hit a RBI single driving in Dougher.
After a scoreless fourth inning the Scots pushed back earning their first run of the contest, on a error allowing Lauren Gierlak to score.
Taylor Fry was able to push the Lakers to a 3-1 lead, in the bottom of the fifth, when she hit a RBI single driving in Egelston.
Koscho would add a second run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when she hit a RBI single driving Dougher in for her second run of the game, giving the Lakers a 4-1 lead.
Victoria Allocco would notch the final run for Edinboro hitting a homerun, in the top of the sixth.
Dougher, drove in the Lakers' final two runs during the bottom of the sixth inning pushing in
Emma LeGendre and Egelston.
Kerri Stevens was the losing pitcher for the Scots throwing for 2.1 innings, she was charged with two earned runs and struck one batter out.
Heather Nye was the winning pitcher for the Lakers she advances her record to 2-7, she went the distance and struck out a pair of batters. Nye was charged with one earned run, and scattered nine hits.
The Lakers will play again tomorrow when the host California (Pa.) in PSAC play at the Mercyhurst Softball Field at 2:30 and 4:30 pm respectively. The Lakers will also honor their four senior members prior to the doubleheader.
