Softball Earns Second Game Shutout To Split With California (Pa.)

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University earned a split in their final home doubleheader of the season against California in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action on Friday at the Mercyhurst Softball Field. The Lakers claimed a 3-0 victory in the second half of the double-header, after they fell 7-0 in game one.
 
Game One- Mercyhurst (0) vs California (7):
Cassandra Egelston, Lindsey Parese, Jolene Teller, and Taylor Fry all went 1-for-3 during the first game accounting for the Lakers hits. Despite a having an on base presence the Lakers were unable to convert any attempts for runs.
 
California earned all of its runs in the top of the sixth inning bringing a 0-0 game to a 7-0 lead. Paige Wilson opened scoring for the contest by hitting a two RBI double, driving in Emily Price and Brooke Wilson. Abbey Sache extended the Vulcan's lead to 3-0 when she hit a RBI single driving in Carlee Wickstrom. Kaylyn Roose added another run by smacking a RBI single driving in Paige Wilson. Taylor Robblee hit a deep three run homer to center field to close scoring in the contest.
 
Heather Ney was the losing pitcher for Mercyhurst she threw for 5.2 innings, recorded three strikeouts, scattered six hits, and was charged with five earned runs.
 
Emilee Downing was the winning pitcher for the Vulcans she threw for seven innings recorded nine strikeouts and was charged with no earned runs on four hits.
 
Game Two- Mercyhurst (3) vs California (0):
Ellie Dougher led the Lakers by going 3-for-4 in the batter's box. While Parese went 2-for-3. Egelstons and Fry both went 1-for-3 and recorded a RBI a piece.
 
The Lakers opened up scoring for the contest in the first inning, when Sarah Koscho was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Egelston scored the first run.
 
Taylor Fry extended the Lakers lead to 2-0 when she hit a RBI single driving in Emme LeGendre in the second inning.
 
Egelston, drove in the game's final run, when she hit a RBI single in the fourth inning to score Parese.
 
Tori Pierucci was the winning pitcher for Mercyhurst she went the distance throwing for all seven innings, recorded 6 strikeouts against 29 batters. Pierucci allowed four walks, and scattered four hits, she was charged with no earned runs. Advancing her overall record to 5-12.
 
Carley Konopka was the losing pitcher for California, she threw for .1 innings, and allowed three walks, and was charged with one earned run.
 
The Lakers will play again tomorrow against Edinboro in their final regular season game, at 1:00 and 3:00 pm held on the campus of Edinboro Univeristy.
