Softball Downed By Slippery Rock

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team fell in both halves of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader against Slippery Rock on Friday. The Lakers fell 7-8 in the first game while dropping the second game 1-3, individual game recaps below.

Game One- Mercyhurst (7) vs Slippery Rock (8):

The Lakers were led by Casandra Egelston who wnt 3-for-4 and knocked in three of the Lakers seven runs. Sarah Koscho went 1-for-2, and recorded the game's first RBI. Natalie Graff recorded a hit during her pinch hitting at bat. 

The Lakers led the game through the top of the first inning after Koscho drove in Egelston on a sacrifice fly to right field. 

Mercyhurst's lead was short lived as Slippery Rock recorded a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The Rock would hold onto this lead for the remainder of the game. Slippery Rock would stretch their lead to as high as 6-2 when recorded four runs in the second inning. 

The Lakers would cut Slippery Rock's lead to 3-6 after Meredith Grimes hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the third. 

Slippery Rock (19-14, 9-6 PSAC) would extend their lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. 

The Lakers earned a run in the sixth inning, after a scoreless fifth inning, Ellie Dougher pushed the Lakers to a 4-7 deficit after hitting a RBI single driving in Egelston. Slippery Rock responded with a run of their own reaffirming their four run lead. 

Mercyhurst (6-24, 3-9 PSAC) made a last inning push to retake the lead from The Rock and recorded three runs. Taylor Fry earned the opening run of the inning by reaching on an error by the shortstop pushing the trailing Lakers to a 5-8. Egelston drove in the Laker's final two runs of the contest when she hit a two RBI single scoring Grimes and Graff. The Lakers were unable to earn any additional runs before their final out. 

Tori Pierucci was the losing pitcher for the contest she threw for 3.2 innings and struck out three of 21 batters faced, she moves to a 4-11 record. Pierucci scattered seven hits, allowed three walks, and was charged with three earned runs. 

Game Two- Mercyhurst (1) vs Slippery Rock (3):
Jamie Ward led the Laker's bats as she went 3-for-3 from the batter's box and recorded the sole RBI of the team. Graff, Koscho, and Jolene Teller all went 1-for-3. 

The Rock recorded the first run of the game in the third inning, on a sacrifice fly from Rebecca Roesch. 

Ward then knotted the action at 1-1 in the top of the fourth hitting a RBI single driving in Megan Christner

After a scoreless two innings, Slippery Rock's Mackenzie Garland knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Leah Vivth hit a RBI single driving The Rock to a 3-1 lead.

The Lakers were able to place a runner on second but were unable to convert any additional scores. 

Heather Nye was the losing pitcher for the Lakers she falls to a 1-5 record on the season. Nye threw for 5.1 innings, and scattered eight hits against 28 batters faced. Nye recorded a strikeout, allowed one walk, and was charged with three earned runs. 

The Lakers will return to action tomorrow when they face off against Seton Hill at 1 and 3 pm on the Seton Hill softball field.
