ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst softball team split in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division matchup against cross town rival Gannon on Saturday. The Lakers (6-21, 3-7 PSAC) claimed the first game 2-0 before falling in the second half of the doubleheader 1-5, individual game recaps below.
Game One- Mercyhurst (2) vs Gannon (0):
Cassandra Egelston led the Lakers going 1-for-1 in the batter's box, while
Jolene Teller and
Ellie Dougher both went 1-for-2.
The Lakers notched the only runs of the game during the bottom of the first inning. Egelston opened scoring in the game advancing to home after a wild pitch.
Taylor Fry pushed the Lakers to their final 2-0 lead after reaching home on an error by Gannon's catcher.
Tori Pierucci was the winning pitcher for the contest as she went the distance and threw for all seven innings. Pierucci recorded seven strikeouts and scattered five hits against 30 batters faced, she allowed three walks and was charged with no earned runs.
Game Two- Mercyhurst (1) vs Gannon (5):
Mercyhurst was led by
Sarah Koscho who went 3-for-4 and recorded the team's sole RBI in the bottom of the fifth. Meredith Grime with 1-for2, and Fry went 1-for-3.
Gannon (19-10, 9-3 PSAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Knights earned a run in the second, a pair of runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.
Koscho smacked a RBI double pushing in Fry to bring the action 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. This would be the closest the Lakers would come to taking the lead.
The Golden Knights earned the game's final run in the top of the sixth on a RBI double from Ingernick.
Kennedy MeMatteis was the winning pitcher scattering 5 hits against 32 batters, she recorded three strikeouts and allowed four walks she was charged with one earned run.
Tori Pierucci was the losing pitcher for the contest she threw for 4.2 innings and was charged with four earned runs, scattering seven hits agsint 24 batters faced.
Heather Nye threw for 2.1 innings she was charged with one earned run and allowed ne hit against ten batters faced.
The Lakers will play next on Tuesday when they take to the road to play Le Moyne in nonconference action at 2:30 and 4:30 pm.
