ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst softball team dropped a pair of one run games to California (Pa.) on Friday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. The Lakers fell 2-1 in game one, before dropping the second half of the doubleheader 8-7, individual game recaps below.
Game One- Mercyhurst (1) vs California (2):
The Lakers were led by
Jolene Teller who went 2-for-2 and recorded the sole RBI.
Ellie Dougher went 2-for-3 while
Sarah Koscho went for 1-for-2.
California opened up scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jackie Fowler hit a RBI single.
Teller knotted the action at 1-1, in the top of the seventh after a scoreless sixth inning. Teller smacked a RBI single driving in Egelston. Teller pushed the winning run to second on this play, the Lakers were unable to capitalize on the play.
California's Carlee Wickstrom hit the game winning RBI single driving in Brooke Wilson.
Tori Pierucci was the losing pitcher for the Lakers she threw for six innings, scattering 11 hits against 30 batters faced. Pierucci allowed three walks and was charged with two earned runs.
Konopka was the winning pitcher she threw for .1 on an inning and struck out the only batter she faced.
Game Two- Mercyhurst (7) vs California (8):
Teller led the Lakers in the second half of the doubleheader, she went 3-for-5 and recorded four RBI's.
Jamie Ward went 4-for-4. Dougher went 3-for-4 and recorded a RBI.
Emma LeGendre also recorded a RBI.
California opened up scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first, earning a RBI double from Wickstrom's bat and a RBI single from Paige Wilson.
Teller drew the action to 2-2 in the fourth by smacking a two RBI single driving in both
Taylor Fry, and Dougher. The Lakers would take a 3-2 lead in the fifth after Dougher's RBI single drove in
Megan Christner.
The Lakers would extend their lead to as high as 5-2 in the top of the sixth.
Meredith Grimes was hit by a pitch with the bases load pushing in
Paige Crittela, driving the Lakers to a 4-2 lead. LeGendre's at bat pushed Mercyhurst to its 5-2 apex after an error by California's cather.
Hailey Wilson put the Vulcans back into contention as she smacked a 3 RBI single in the bottom of the sixth bringing the game to a 5-5 deadlock.
Teller hit her second 2 RBI single of the game to push the Lakers out in front 7-8. The Vulcans however were able to once again close the gap bringing the score to 7-7 forcing extra innings.
In the eighth inning the Lakers were able to place the winning run on second but were unable to convert.
The Vulcans earned the game winning run with two outs and the bases loaded, on a wild pitch in which Abbey Sachse scored the game's final run.
Sarah Eschleman was the losing pitcher for the Lakers she scattered nine hits against 29 batters faced in six inning of work from the circle. Eschleman allowed a pair of walks and was charged with seven earned runs.
Heather Nye threw for 1.2 innings she recorded a pair of strikeouts and was charged with one earned run.
Konopka was the winning pitcher she threw for seven innings and scattered 11 hits against 34 batters faced. She was charged with five earned runs, recorded four strikeouts and allowed three walks.
The Lakers will play again tomorrow against cross town rival Gannon at 11 am, on the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
