CLAREMONT, Fla.—The Mercyhurst softball team fell both of their games during the fifth day of play during their spring games series. The Lakers fell 2-1 against Wilmington in their opening game of the day before faltering against Georgian Court 9-7, individual game recaps below.
WILMINGTON 2 vs MERCYHURST 1
The Lakers were led by
Emma LeGendre, who went 1-for-1 during her stint in the batter's box and scored the sole run for Mercyhurst. Cassandra Egelton and
Ellie Dougher both went 1-for-3.
After a scoreless three innings of play Wilmington opened up scoring knocking in one of their two runs in the top of the fourth.
Mercyhurst would knot the action at 1-1 when LeGendre reached home on an error from the catcher.
Wilmington would score their final run of the game in the top of the seventh, Mercyhurst placed the tying run on first base but were unable to convert for a run.
Tori Pierucci was the losing pitcher for the Lakers, she went the distance throwing for all seven innings, scattering six hits against 28 batters faced. Pierucci recorded eight strikeouts, allowed two walks and was charged with one earned run.
GEORGIAN COURT 9 vs MERCYHURST 7
Sarah Koscho led the Lakers going 3-for-4, including a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.
Jolene Teller also went 3-for-4 and led steals with one.
Jamie Ward and
Jenna Balducci each notched two RBIs.
The Lakers went on an early run scoring four runs during their first inning of play. Ward drove in Koscho and Teller when she nailed a two RBI single down the middle. Balducci drove in two runs scoring Ward and
Lindsey Parese, when she hit a two RBI single to left field.
Georgian Court would knot the score after driving in four runs of their own during the bottom off the first. Georgian Court would extend their lead to 6-4, in the fourth and jumped to a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Koscho brought the trailing Lakers within two runs when she smacked a three run homer during her at bat in the top of the seventh, scoring Teller, Fry, and herself. The Lakers were unable to gain any more runs after this point.
Heather Nye was the losing pitcher for Mercyhurst she threw for 2.2 innings and scattered five hits against 12 batters faced and was charged with two earned runs.
The Lakers will play again next when they travel to Laker Erie College on March 17
th in a non-conference doubleheader at 1pm.
