#17 Women's Lax Hangs On For Win At Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. -- The 17th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team claimed its first win of the season, taking a 15-13 non-conference decision over Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday.

Angelina Simon had four goals while Taylor Izzo had a seven-point game -- with one goal and six assists -- to lead the Lakers (1-1). Kristin Anderson and Cassandra Ellis added three goals apiece.

Torie Sullivan had two goals while Brenna Fosco and Lacey Netti tallied one goal each. Anderson, Fosco and Sullivan also had assists.

Anderson and Simon controlled six and five draws, respectively.

On defense, Kira Kolb and Libby Montanye finished with three caused turnovers and three groundballs each. Goalie Abby Miller made five saves and picked up three groundballs.

The host Bears (1-4) were led by Rachel Elmore, who scored six goals. Cathleen Gaffney added one goal and four assists. Ines Flueck had 10 saves in goal.

Mercyhurst jumped out to a 4-1 lead, getting two goals from Sullivan, and led the rest of the way.

L-R pulled within 8-6 in the second half before the Lakers responded with a 4-0 run. Anderson had two goals and Izzo made three assists in that stretch.

The Bears went on a 7-2 run late in the second half, but never pulled within one goal of Mercyhurst.

Mercyhurst led on shots (33-22), groundballs (17-12) and draw controls (16-14).

The Lakers will return to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. non-conference game at eighth-ranked Limestone.
