Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Fl. – The Mercyhurst softball team went 1-1 during their fourth day of spring games downing Wayne State this morning 12-2 before faltering against Winona State 6-2 later in the day. Individual game recaps below.
WAYNE STATE 2 vs MERCYHURST 12 (Six Innings):
The Lakers were led by sophomores
Jolene Teller and
Meredith Grimes, both went 2-for-4 in the batter's box. Teller, and
Jamie Ward led the team in RBIs with two apiece.
Jenna Balducci and
Sarah Koscho each recorded one RBI.
The Lakers punched in two runs early in the first inning in stretching their lead to 2-0 when Jolene teller hit a two RBI double driving in
Ellie Dougher, and Balducci.
Wayne State would push back shortening the Lakers lead to 2-1 driving in a run of their own in the first and would knot the game at 2-2 in the second inning.
The action would remain deadlocked at 2-2 until the Lakers had an explosive fifth inning in which they pushed in seven of their twelve runs.
Cassandra Egelston earned the first run in the fifth inning, as she hit a single then stole both second and third base, an error from Wayne State's center fielder allowed her to score unearned.
Sarah Koscho then drove in Balducci on an RBI double.
Jamie Ward earned both her RBIs in one swing driving both Teller and Koscho in on a double. Egelston drove in the final two runs of the inning on a single, allowing
Taylor Fry, and Grimes to score. Stretching their lead to 9-2.
The Lakers would earn their final three runs of the game during the sixth inning, Koscho drove in Teller, and Balducci scored unearned. Ward scored the final run of the game when she was drove in by a RBI single from Grimes.
WINONA STATE 6 vs MERCYHURST 2:
Koscho led batting during the Laker's second game of the day going 1-for-2. Teller went 1-for-3 and batted in both Laker runs.
Mercyhurst took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Teller smacked a single to center field, scoring both Dougher, and Egelston for the only Lakers run.
Winona State would knot the action at 2-2 through the top of the second inning and would not claim the lead until the fifth where they recorded three runs. Winona State would notch their last run in the sixth inning to bring scoring in the game to a rest.
Heather Nye was the losing pitcher she threw for six innings and scattered 11 hits against 27 batters faced, she allowed one walk and was charged with six earned runs.
The Lakers will play again tomorrow against Wilmington and Georgian Court University tomorrow at 9am and 11am.
