Upset Bid Falls Short In #20 Women's Lax Loss To #13 WCU

ERIE, Pa. -- The 20th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-10 loss to No. 13 West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Tullio Field. The visiting Golden Rams scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining.

Angelina Simon and Kristin Anderson fueled the Laker offense, combining for nine of MU's 10 goals. Simon finished with five goals and one assist while Anderson totaled four goals, one assist and six draw controls.

Goalkeeper Raelyn Tiberio was solid at the other end for Mercyhurst (5-3, 3-1), accumulating 18 saves. Tiberio's performance marked the highest save total by a Laker goalie since an 18-save day by Jenny Perkins (18-14 win at Bloomsburg, Apr. 3, 2012).

Taylor Izzo added a goal and two assists, Lacey Netti made two assists and Kira Kolb dished one assist.

Diana Schmitt had five groundballs and three caused turnovers.

The Lakers built an early 2-0 lead against the unbeaten Rams -- and led again by two at 3-1 -- before West Chester closed the first half with six consecutive goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.

The Golden Rams (9-0, 4-0) tacked on a seventh straight goal early in the second, widening the gap to 8-3.

Mercyhurst charged back with four goals -- two by Simon and two by Anderson -- to trim the WCU advantage to 8-7. The Rams then pushed their lead back to two before goals 17 seconds apart by Simon and Izzo evened the board at 9-9.

The two teams traded goals -- Maggie Stella for WCU and Anderson for Mercyhurst -- to forge a 10-10 knot. That set the stage for a free-position goal by Drew McKinney during the final minute, putting the visitors ahead for good.

Sami Barnett was the leading goal-scorer for West Chester, finishing with four tallies. Stella added three goals and one assist while winning goalie Julianne Clemens totaled seven saves.

WCU held advantages in shots (37-23), groundballs (21-19) and draws (12-11).

The Lakers will return to action Tuesday with a 4 p.m. PSAC matchup at cross-town rival Gannon.
