WHEELING, W. Va. -- The 20th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team opened the game with a 9-0 run and cruised to an 18-8 victory over non-conference opponent Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday.
Kristin Anderson,
Angelina Simon and
Torie Sullivan scored three goals apiece while
Olivia Africa tallied two goals and one assist.
Single goals were recorded by
Taylor Izzo,
Lacey Netti,
Emma Hubert,
Cassandra Ellis,
Jenna Hagen,
Megan Fitzpatrick and
Payton Cook.
Izzo also had four assists and Netti made two assists.
Emma Falter,
Brenna Fosco and
Grace Lawson contributed assists to the Mercyhurst effort.
In the cage,
Raelyn Tiberio stopped four shots in the first half and was the winning goalie,.
Abby Miller stopped 10 shots in the second half.
For host Wheeling Jesuit (2-8), Hayley Holmquist led the way with four goals while Ally Coggins contributed one goal and two assists. Goalie Elizabeth Hanks had eight saves.
During the Lakers' game-opening, nine-goal run, Simon tacked on the first three goals of the game. Mercyhurst (5-2) never looked back from there.
The Lakers outshot WJU, 33-25, and dominated the draw, 21-7.
Anderson had six draw controls while
Kira Kolb and Alex Perna controlled four draws apiece.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent West Chester.
