GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team won its 14th consecutive match, taking a 9-0 decision at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action on Friday. The Lakers, who are ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region, opened PSAC West play with their match.
The Lakers (14-0, 1-0) swept doubles play and then won all six singles matches. The victory was clinched with
Kayla Frost's point at No. 2 singles.
MU's third doubles pair of
Ivona Plecevic and
Athina Tsagkaraki opened the scoring with an 8-1 triumph over Caitlynn Hirak and Kaitlyn Walch.
The other two Laker doubles teams followed suit. At No. 2, the sixth-ranked team in the Atlantic,
Kayla Frost and
Adrianna Jeffress, won 8-2 over Cameron Beer and Ana Salazar. In the No. 1 pairs match,
Saioa Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic (No. 4 Atlantic doubles) defeated Madison DeBone and Jenna Bailey, 8-3.
The first singles point was snagged at No. 6 as Tsagkaraki swept Hirak, 6-0, 6-0. That set the stage for the clincher by Frost (No. 2 Atlantic singles) over Bailey, 6-3, 6-1.
The Lakers finished off the next four singles matches with wins, in order, by Spahalic, Plecevic, Jeffress and Gomez de Segura.
Spahalic won at No. 5 singles against Walch, 6-0, 6-2; Plecevic was victorious at No. 4 versus Salazar, 6-0, 6-0; Jeffress (No. 3 Atlantic singles) downed Beer at third singles, 6-0, 6-2; and the 12th-ranked player in the NCAA Division II, Gomez de Segura (No. 1 Atlantic singles), handled DeBone in the top match, 6-1, 6-3.
Gomez de Segura and Frost extended individual wins streaks to 13 matches each. Spahalic and Tsagkaraki are on 12-match win streaks and Plecevic has won nine in a row. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (27-2), Frost (21-3), Jeffress (22-3), Plecevic (18-4), Spahalic (15-2) and Tsagkaraki (15-4).
Gomez de Segura and Spahalic teamed for their 17th consecutive doubles win; they are 20-1 in their last 21 matches. Frost and Jeffress combined for their ninth straight win in pairs action. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 7-1 in their last eight matches together.
The Lakers will return to action on Tuesday with a home PSAC West match against Slippery Rock.
