ERIE, Pa. -- The 25th-ranked Mercyhurst women's tennis team earned its eighth straight win of the year, sweeping non-conference Notre Dame (Ohio), 9-0, on Sunday.
The Lakers, who are also rated second in the Atlantic Region, swept through two doubles points -- and earned another via forfeit -- before
Saioa Gomez de Segura closed out the match with her victory at No. 1Â singles.
Gomez de Segura teamed with
Adina Spahalic in doubles competition as the fourth-rated pairs team in the Atlantic took an 8-2 win over Emily Hofsess and Ameer Robertson in the No. 1 doubles match. Gomez de Segura and Spahalic have won 11 straight matches as a duo and are 14-1 in their last 15.
At second doubles,
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost won an 8-0 decision against Camryn Kidd and Hannah Phillippi. Jeffress and Frost -- the sixth-rated pairs team in the Atlantic -- are winners of three straight doubles matches.
The two doubles wins on the courts combined with a forfeit point in doubles and a forfeit win in singles to help the Lakers (8-0) to a 4-0 advantage before Gomez de Segura clinched the MU victory.
Gomez de Segura, ranked fourth in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the Atlantic, bested NDC's Laura Herrerra, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
She was followed, in order, by
Athina Tsagkaraki,
Ivona Plecevic, Frost and Jeffress.
Tsagkaraki won the fifth singles match against Phillippi, 6-0, 6-0; Plecevic won at fourth singles over Kidd, 6-0, 6-0; Frost, the 50th-ranked player in D-II and No. 2 in the Atlantic, handled Hofsess at second singles, 6-1, 6-1; and Jeffress (No. 3 Atlantic singles) was victorious versus Robertson, 6-1, 6-0, at third singles.
Gomez de Segura is now 21-2 this school year in singles play. She has won seven straight matches.
Frost and Jeffress are on seven-match singles win streaks. Frost is 11-1 in her last 12 and Jeffress is 10-1 in her last 11. Also, Plecevic is 10-1 in her last 10 matches and Tsagakaraki is 8-1 in her last nine matches.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 3, with a visit ot West Liberty.
