ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team took a 9-0 decision over Salem in non-conference action on Wednesday at Westwood Racquet Club.
The Lakers (7-0), ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region, opened the match by taking all three doubles matches. They swept singles play, clinching the match when the fourth-ranked player in NCAA Division II,
Saioa Gomez de Segura, finished her win over Kristina Vuksanovic at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic, who are ranked fourth in the Atlantic as a pairs team, got the Lakers a 1-0 lead during the the No. 2 doubles match, winning 8-0 over Salem's Shelby Turpin and Megan Perez. MU's No. 3 pairing of Ivona Plecevic and
Athina Tsagkaraki also took an 8-0 decision, besting Brianna Vasquez and Jennfer Perez.
Mercyhurst's No. 1 doubles team of
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost won over Vuksanovic and Anna Kovalova, 8-4. Jeffress and Frost are rated sixth in the Atlantic.
After the Lakers took a 3-0 lead through doubles play, Jeffress picked up the team's fourth point. The third-ranked player in the Atlantic, Jeffress bested Turpin, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles.
Gomez de Segura finished the match and then Frost, Plecevic, Tsagkaraki and Spahalic followed, in order, with wins.
Frost, rated second in the Atlantic and 50th in D-II, was a 6-3, 6-2, winner over Kovalova at No. 2 singles.
Plecevic handled Megan Perez, 6-0, 6-0, at fourth singles; Spahalic defeated Vasquez at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Tsagkaraki finished Jennifer Perez at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Frost, Jeffress and Spahalic are on six-match singles win streaks. Frost is 10-1 in her last 11, Jeffress is 9-1 in her last 10 and Spahalic is 7-1 in her last eight. Plecevic is 9-1 in her last 10 matches and Tsagakaraki is 7-1 in her last eight matches, including an eight-match win streak.
In doubles action, Gomez de Segura and Spahalic have a 10-match win streak and are 13-1 in their last 14 matches. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 4-1 in their last five pairs matches.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Sunday when Notre Dame visits Westwood Racquet Club for a non-conference matchup.
