OLEAN, N.Y. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its season with a 6-1 win over Division I Saint Bonaventure during non-conference play on Sunday.
The Lakers fell behind during the doubles portion of the match, 1-0, as SBU took the lone pairs point -- per D-I rules -- by winning 2 of 3 matches.
Mercyhurst's lone doubles victory occurred at No. 2 doubles as
Saioa Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic teamed for a 7-6 (3) victory over Francesa Chin and Buse Gunay.
The Lakers then swept singles play, winning all six matches in that stage of the event.
Gomez de Segura pulled Mercyhurst even at 1-1 with a triumph over Gabriella Bowe at first singles. Gomez de Segura won 6-2, 6-3.
Adrianna Jeffress then finished off her singles win at No. 3 and was followed by
Kayla Frost at No. 2 singles and then
Ivona Plecevic, whose win at No. 4 clinched victory for the Lakers. Spahalic and
Athina Tsagkaraki also had singles victories for Merychurst.
Jeffress defeated Dominique Mortier, 6-3, 6-3; Frost outlasted Kahlei Reisinger, 7-5, 7-6 (7); and Plecevic won the only singles match to reach three sets, defeated Gunay, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Spahalic won at No. 5 singles against Chin, 6-1, 6-2, and Tsagkaraki earned the match's final decision at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-1, win versus Eleanor Gerhard.
The Lakers (4-0) will be in action next when Saginaw Valley State visits Erie on Friday.
