Nicolete Newman led a quintet of Mercyhurst scorers in double-figures as she had 20 points in the Laker women's basketball team's 89-64 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Eliza Oswalt added 17 points,
Rachel Chessar put in 14,
Emily Shopene contributed 11 and
Amber Renz finished with 10 for the Lakers (2-7). Newman also had four steals and Oswalt dished six assists.
Lauren Lapertosa and
Kori Sidwell led MU on the boards with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.
Mercyhurst took an early 12-4 lead -- courtesy of an 8-0 run which Newman capped with a 3-pointer.
The Lakers closed the first quarter with a 16-0 run and tacked on another 2-pointer to stretch the streak to 18 early in the second quarter. Oswalt led that run with eight points.
The home team continued to stretch out its lead, leading by as many as 39 in the second half.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game against Kutztown at 1 p.m.
