Women's Basketball Tallies First Win of the Season, 78-76 over Walsh

Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 78-76 non-conference win over Walsh on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
 
Maria Lapertosa led the Lakers with 22 points while Eliza Oswalt chipped in for 19 points. Nicolete Newman and Emily Shopene also recorded 14 and 13 points, respectively. Lapertosa was the leading rebounder with seven boards. Shopene added five boards while Oswalt led with five assists.
 
Mercyhurst (1-3) trailed by as many as nine points during the first half. It led by as many as four, for a 43-39 halftime lead.
 
During the second half the two teams tied the score four times before Lapertosa capitalized, making both her free throws to put Mercvhurst up 78-76 with one second left to play.
 
Mercyhurst held on to claim its first victory.
 
Mercyhurst made 26 of 68 field goals (44.8 percent), including 15 of 26 from the three-point line (57.7 percent).
 
The Lakers held Walsh (2-2) to a 31-for-61 showing from the field (50.8 percent), including 5 of 18 from three (27.8 percent).
 
Next Up: The Lakers are back in action next when they travel to Ursuline on Nov. 20. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
