ERIE, Pa. --
Sarah Hine finished with two goals and one assist as the Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team stormed back from a three-goal deficit to gut out a 4-4 tie with seventh-ranked Cornell on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
The Lakers (6-6-1) trailed 3-0 before coming back with four consecutive goals. The Big Red (4-1-1) equalized, forging a 4-4 tie.
Mary Katherine Gialames and
Alexa Vasko had goals for Mercyhurst; Gialames' was her first as a collegian. Liliane Perrault totaled two assists while Gialames,
Summer-Rae Dobson,
Molly Blasen,
K.K. Thiessen and
Morgan Stacey tacked on single assists.
Cornell powered its way to three straight goals in a span of 9:53 to take a 3-0 lead in the second. Maddie Mills had two of those goals. Pippy Gerace had the first.
A redirection by Vasko off a shot from the point by Stacey helped Mercyhurst cut the deficit to 3-1 before heading into the third period.
The Lakers tallied three goals in a span of 3:23 in the third. Hine had the first two of those three goals. She wristed the first one through traffice and over the left shoulder of Cornell goalie Lindsay Browning; credit Perrault and Blasen with assists.
Hine tied the contest at 3-3 when Gialames found her open in front of the net. Dobson also assisted the goal.
Mercyhurst took its only lead when Gialames snapped a shot over Browning's left shoulder from the right point. Hine and Thiessen had assists.
Cornell tied the game with 5:43 remaining on as core by Serdar Lenka.
The Lakers were 0 of 2 on the power play while Cornell went 2-for-3.
Browning had 27 saves for the Big Red. Mercyhurst goalie
Kennedy Blair had five stops in a relief effort and was the goalie of record.
The Lakers and Big Red will meet again on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start at the MIC. Tickets will be available 90 minutes before puck drop and may be purchased with cash only at the door. They are $10 per adult and $5 for student/seniors. MU students get free admission.
