ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team battled back from a one-set deficit to defeat Shippensburg, 3-1, in a PSAC contest on Friday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Shelby Chesko smacked 18 kills,
Alyssa Zirnheld had 13 kills and
Katie Baird totaled 12 kills for the Lakers (9-16, 4-8), who won with set scores of 20-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-21.
Claire Kenny added 31 assists and 16 digs and
Mary Marusza dished 21 assists as Mercyhurst handed Shippensburg (20-4, 10-2) its second conference loss.
Hannah Vuylsteke made 32 digs and
Leah Kern totaled five blocks.
For Ship, Morgan DeFloria and Gabriella Johnson had 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Emily Hangen had 42 assitss and Megan Forstburg finished with 26 digs.
After dropping the first set, the Lakers evened the match at 1-1 in the second. MU scored five straight points to take a 6-2 lead, getting two aces from
Zoe Gadomski and three assists from Kenny during that stretch. It led the rest of the way.
In the third, Mercyhurst trailed by as many as five points and eventually closed the set with a 9-4 stretch. The Lakers faced set-point twice, but answered both times before closing with the set's final three points. Chesko had two kills and
Beth Brady came off the bench for a key kill.
During the fourth, MU broke a 7-all tie and led the rest of the set to secure the win.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday with a 4:05 p.m home match against PSAC opponent Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
