ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team fell 73-54 to No. 15 Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.
Kori Sidwell led Mercyhurst (7-12, 5-8 PSAC), with 15 points.
Emily Shopene contributed 13 points and led rebounds for the Lakers with eight.
Lauren Lapertosa and
Maria Lapertosa each contributed eight points apiece.
Edinboro (16-2, 12-2 PSAC) was led by Jontay Walton, who posted a game-high of 19 points. Ciara Rosten earned a double-double with 17 pounds and 10 rebounds. Michaela Barnes added 13 points while Michelle Jahn and Ayana Vaughn each added 11.
Edinboro took the lead off the initial basket off a layup from Jahn and would never trail. The Fighting Scots would extend their lead to as high as 21 when they led 73-51 with under a minute to play in the game.
Mercyhurst trailed 38-26 going into the second half, in which they would cut the Edinboro lead to as little as four points. The Lakers would reach this four-point berth twice in the third quarter the last time coming with five minutes left in the quarter trailing 45-41. This would be as close as the Lakers would come to claiming the lead and winning the game. The Lakers trailed 45-52 going into the final quarter of play. Edinboro cemented their victory outscoring the Lakers 21-9 in the fourth.
Edinboro held a slight edge at the backboard, outrebounding the Lakers, 33-29. Mercyhurst had trouble in the turnover department, giving the ball up 19 times compared to the 15 surrendered by the Scots. These turnovers accounted for 17 points for visiting Edinboro.
The Lakers held the edge from beyond the arc converting 6 of 14 attempts (42.9%), Edinboro made 7 of 17 attempts (41.2%). Mercyhurst shot 22 for 53 (41.5%) from the field and made 4 of 6 (66.7%) attempts from the free throw line.
The Lakers will play again next on Saturday when they host No. 6 Indiana University Of Pennsylvania in PSAC action at 1:00 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
