Women's Basketball Suffer Loss In First Porreco Pride Of Erie Apperance

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team dropped an 85-57 contest across town at Gannon during Wednesday's Porreco Pride of Erie matchup at the Hammermill Center.

Amber Renz was the Lakers' leading scorer, totaling 18 points. Eliza Oswalt added 14 points and Vivian Allison contributed 11. Emily Shopene compiled six rebounds and four assists.

Gannon's Maggie Mitchell, who claimed the contest's Game Changer Award, finished with 28 points and nine rebounds. Nicole LaCava scored 17 points and Sydney Mitchell put in 14 points. Chelsea Rourke had a double-double worth 13 points and 11 rebounds.


The host Golden Knights opened the game with 10 consecutive points and pushed the gap to 17-2 during the first quarter. Trailing 19-4, the Lakers bridged a 10-3 stretch of their own – Oswalt buried a pair of three-pointers in the process – to close the deficit to 22-14. After that, the Knights took command with seven straight points to push their lead back to 15 points.

Gannon eventually built a 40-21 advantage at intermission as Maggie Mitchell led the way with 17 first-half points. The Golden Knights (9-8, 6-5 PSAC) held the lead in double-figures the rest of the way, leading by as many as 35.

Mercyhurst went 22 of 54 from the field (40.7 percent) and 5 of 21 from beyond the three-point arc (40.7). The host Knights had a strong night from the field, going 33 of 61 (54.1), including a solid 12 of 25 from three-point land (48.0). Gannon held a slim 31-29 rebound advantage.

The Lakers (6-11, 4-7 PSAC) will return to action on Saturday when they host California (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. PSAC tip-off.
