MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team cruised to a season-opening 9-0 victory over non-conference opponent Allegheny on Wednesday.
The Lakers (1-0) outscored the Gators, 24-7, in doubles competition and then 72-5 in singles play.
Mercyhurst opened the match with a point at No. 3 doubles action and never looked back.
Adina Spahalic and
Athina Tsagkaraki combined for an 8-2 win against Allegheny's Rachel Crookston and Lauren Fugate.
MU also grabbed wins at first and second doubles.
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost defeated Gaby DeLeon and Amanda Ress Liere, 8-3, at No. 1 while
Saioa Gomez de Segura and
Ivona Plecevic teamed for an 8-2 victory over Miharu Koh and Sarah Casey at No. 2.
During singles action, Frost, Jeffress and Spahalic recorded 6-0, 6-0, wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Frost bested Ress Liere, Jeffress handled Casey and Spahalic got past Fugate.
Gomez de Segura was a 6-1, 6-0, winner against DeLeon at first singles. That match clinched the win for Mercyhurst.
Plecevic and Tsagkaraki made their MU singles debuts with wins. Plecevic defeated Koh, 6-0, 6-2, and Tsagkaraki won against Crookston, 6-0, 6-2.
