Field Hockey Pushes Past AIC

ERIE, Pa. – Leah Rogers and Clare Ahern had one goal and one assist each as the Mercyhurst field hockey team won its season opener, 2-1, against American International during Sunday's non-conference action at Tullio Field.

Mercyhurst (1-0) scored two unanswered goals to come back from an early 1-0 deficit. Rogers' goal was the game's only second-half tally and it served as the game-winner. She was assisted by Ahern in the 44th minute, knotting the game at 1-all.

Ahern scored Mercyhurst's first goal in the 33rd, receiving an assist from Rogers. That goal occurred less than six minutes after AIC's Chelsea Davis scored the game's initial goal.

Mercyhurst was able to keep AIC on its heels throughout the contest, peppering the Yellow Jackets with 22 shots while AIC (0-2) was able to only muster six.

Victoria Triaga was the winning goalie for the game. She posted two saves.

Mercyhurst also took time to honor their six senior players before the match. Katrina Bruzda, Paige Albright, Taylor Balser, Jessica David, Nicolette Tomani and Amanda Frappolli received recognition as they embark on their final season as a Mercyhurst Laker.

The Lakers will take the field next on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 12 p.m. when they visit Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competitor Millersville.
