ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team outlasted Lock Haven, 3-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Friday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Katie Baird had 13 kills and 10 digs while
Tess Ganich put down 12 kills for the Lakers, who won the match, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 15-11.
Alyssa Zirnheld added 10 kills, three aces and 16 digs while
Shelby Chesko contributed 10 kills of her own.
Makayla
Mollé and
Abby Rose made 25 and 20 assists, respectively.
Hannah Vuylsteke made 24 digs while Rose also had 11 digs and four aces.
Veronica Morrison led the visiting Bald Eagles with 15 kills and 10 digs. Breanna McDonald and Gabrielle Stick added nine and eight kills, respectively. Kristen Nealon added 39 assists.
LHU jumped ahead with a first-set victory, breaking a 6-all tie with four straight points. The Eagles led the rest of the set and eventually closed with another four-point run.
The Lakers battled back with wins in the second and third sets. During the second, Mercyhurst responded to a 6-0 Lock Haven streak with five points of its own, taking as 16-13 lead in the process. The Lakers held their lead to even the match at 1-1.
Then, during the third, an 8-0 Mercyhurst run enabled to the hosts to take command. Ganish had four kills and Zirnheld contributed two aces during that stretch. Mercyhurst held off LHU the rest of the way to take a 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth, Mercyhurst led by as many as four points, but Lock Haven enjoyed a 9-0 stretch late in the set to even the match at 2-2.
During the fifth, the Lakers jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed. LHU closed its deficit to 13-11, but the Lakers scored two straight points, getting a block from
Alyssa Kling and a kill by Ganich to finish the contest.
The Lakers (6-8, 1-2) will return to action on Saturday with a 4:05 p.m. home PSAC match against Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
