Softball Falls Twice Against California

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Mercyhurst softball team dropped a pair of contests to California (Pa.), 3-1 and 8-1, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Sunday.

Individual game recaps are below.

Game One: California 3, Mercyhurst 1
Cassandra Egelston's home run provided the only Mercyhurst run before the host Vulcans took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth inning.

Egelston homered in the fourth, tying the game after Cal scored its first run in the second. Jolene Teller added a double to MU's offensive effort.

The Vulcans opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Logan Blake before Egelston tied the contest.

Then, in the sixth, Cal took the lead on a Mercyhurst error. Hailey Wilson then had an RBI single, extending the Vulcan lead to 3-1.

Heather Nye pitched six innings for the Lakers. She was the losing pitcher, but was charged with only one earned run.

Kaity Davis was the winning pitcher for California.

Game Two: California 8, Mercyhurst 1
Emily Hair led Mercyhurst's offense, batting 3-for-3 and scoring the team's only run.

Meredith Grimes drove in the Laker run with an RBI groundout in the second inning.

Cal then responded with one run in its half of the second and, later, scored twice in the fifth inning and five times in the sixth to extend its lead.
