#10 Women's Lacrosse Hangs On For Sixth Straight Victory

ERIE, Pa. -- Carly Zimmerman scored five goals, helping the 10th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 victory over Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Tullio Field

Zimmerman, who had two assists, and Taylor Izzo had seven-point games. Izzo totaled two goals and five assists. Zimmerman also had five draw controls and four groundballs.

Grace Lawson tacked on three goals and one assist, Janelle Williams put in two goals and Catherine Meegan tallied one goal for the Lakers (8-2, 6-1), who led by as many as nine goals before the visiting Marauders stormed back.

Also for Mercyhurst, Lacey Netti had an assist and Williams controlled five draws.

Defensively, Angelina Simon and Diana Schmitt had three groundballs each while Kristin Anderson and Kira Kolb caused two turnovers apiece. Winning goaltender Gabby Gravino stopped four shots.

The Lakers charged out to an 8-1 lead in the first half -- getting three goals from Zimmerman during that stretch -- and eventually led at halftime, 9-2.

Millersville began to chip away at its deficit -- higlighted by a 7-1 stretch in which Sabrina Fusco put in three goals.

A score by Renee Landis pulled the Marauders (5-6, 2-4) within one goal with 1:26 remaining in the contest before Williams put home an insurance goal for the Lakers with 1:02 showing on the clock. That was the game's final goal.

Fusco led all goal-scorers with seven goals. Bryanna Weston-Wyatt was the losing goalie with six saves.

Mercyhurst outshot Millersville, 28-18, and held a 17-9 advantage in draw controls. The Marauders won the groundball battle, 21-16.

The Lakers will return to competition on Saturday, Apr. 15, with a 1 p.m. PSAC game at East Stroudsburg.
