Lawson Powers #10 Women's Lacrosse Past Shippensburg

ERIE, Pa. -- Grace Lawson scored five goals in leading the 10th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Friday at Tullio Field. The Lakers have won five straight games.

Janelle Williams added three goals and one assist while Taylor Izzo contributed two goals and three assists to the Laker effort.

Kristin Anderson, Angelina Simon and Cassandra Ellis chipped in with two goals each. Anderson also had five groundballs and three draw controls.

Also for the Lakers, Carly Zimmerman picked up three draws and Kira Kolb totaled five groundballs.

Gabby Gravino was the winning goalie, finishing with two saves. Abigail Miller made one stop in a relief effort.

Ship's top scorer was Ali Harclerode, who scored four goals. Max Barkley had three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Bridgette Morrissey was credited with the loss in goal.

A goal by Harclerode opened the game's scoring, but Mercyhurst quickly surged past its visitors with six consecutive goals during a span of 13:48. Lawson and Williams had two goals apiece during that stretch, which left the Lakers with a 6-1 advantage.

The Raiders (6-4, 2-4) came back with two more first-half goals, closing their deficit to 6-3, but then Mercyhurst went on a decisive nine-goal run across both halves. The Lakers scored four goals during the final 9:57 of the first half and then put in five straight goals to open the second; Lawson led the run -- this time with three goals.

Statistically, Mercyhurst held advantages over Shippensburg in several areas: shots (32-15), groundballs (17-14) and draw controls (17-9).

The Lakers (7-2, 5-1) will return to action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. contest against Millersville.
