#17 Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Late Charge From Slippery Rock

ERIE, Pa. -- The 17th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team held off a late push from Slippery Rock to secure a 10-9 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at Tullio Field.

Carly Zimmerman recorded four goals and one assist for the Lakers (10-4, 8-3). Kristin Anderson and Janelle Williams put in two goals apiece. Anderson also had an assist and Williams controlled five draws.

Single goals were scored by Angelina Simon and Taylor Izzo. Izzo also made three assists while Lacey Netti contributed two assists and Emma Falter had one assist.

Anderson, Zimmerman and Kira Kolb picked up three groundballs each in support of winning goalie Gabby Gravino, who had 10 saves.

The Lakers jumped out to a 6-0 lead, getting three goals from Zimmerman and two from Anderson during that stretch, but SRU never went away.

The visiting Rock scored four straight goals, closing the gap to 6-4. After that, Mercyhurst pushed its lead back to four, SRU closed back to two and then the Lakers, once again, pushed it back to four at 10-6.

Slippery Rock scored the game's last three goals, including two by Tia Torchia.

Torchia scored with 1:07 remaining in the second half, pulling the Rock within one, and then SRU won the ensuing draw before committing a turnover to seal the win for Mercyhurst.

Torchia led the SRU effort with four goals while goalie Emily Bitka made 10 saves.

The Lakers outshot their visitors, 24-19, while the teams were even in draw controls, 10-10.

Mercyhurst will return to action with its regular-season finale on Saturday when it visits Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. draw.
