SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. --
Taylor Izzo led Mercyhurst with four goals as the 10th-ranked Laker women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 16-5 non-conference win over Shepherd on Saturday.
Carly Zimmerman also had four points, finishing with three goals, one assist and three draw controls.
Grace Lawson added three goals while
Kristin Anderson and
Janelle Williams scored two goals apiece. Anderon also picked up four draws.
Single goals were recorded by
Cassandra Ellis and
Catherine Meegan.
Lacey Netti made two assists and
Morgan Parker dished one assist.
In the cage, winning goaltender
Gabby Gravino stopped 11 shots. She also picked up five groundballs.
Mercyhurst (1-0) broke a 2-all tie with 10 consecutive goals -- seven in the first half and three in the second -- to grab a 12-2 lead. Izzo had three of her scores during that stretch.
Haley Price had two goals and one assist for Shepherd (0-2). Courtney Matthews contributed two goals, as well, and goalie Casey Hickman finished with six saves.
The Lakers will return to action on Thursday with a 3 p.m. non-conference game at West Virginia Wesleyan.
