WEST CHESTER, Pa. --
Carly Zimmerman totaled five goals and two assists as the 10th-ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team edged No. 6 West Chester, 14-13, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday.
Kristin Anderson and
Janelle Williams added three goals apiece for the Lakers (3-2, 1-1), who once held a seven-goal lead. Anderson also had eight draw controls.
Other Mercyhurst goal scorers were
Taylor Izzo,
Lacey Netti, and
Emma Falter. Izzo tallied three assists and four draw controls, as well, while
Diana Schmitt compiled three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Gabby Gravino was the winning goalie, finishing with seven saves.
Mercyhurst held a 5-4 lead in the first half before ripping off six straight goals to build an 11-4 advantage. Zimmerman had two goals during that stretch.
The Golden Rams (4-1, 1-1) answered with five straight goals of their own -- the beginning of a 7-1 stretch -- and pulled within 12-11 after a pair of goals by Ashley Pyle.
Then, Williams and Izzo scored 36 seconds apart, pushing the Mercyhurst lead back to three goals before WCU answered again with two more goals -- one by Ali Donohue and another by Pyle. Pyle's goal occurred with 53 seconds left and served as the game's final score. West Chester was unable to gain possession for the rest of the game.
Both times that the Rams closed within one goal, Anderson came through with a clutch draw control. The hosts never had possession with a chance to tie.
Pyle finished with five goals to lead WCU while Dina Cifelli totaled one goal and seven assists. Goaltender Nicole Martinis finished with five saves.
West Chester outshot Mercyhurst, 27-24. The Lakers won the groundball battle, 10-9, and outdrew the Rams, 17-12.
The Lakers will return to competition on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. PSAC home contest against cross-town rival Gannon.
